Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary treatment applied in all obstructive and restrictive respiratory disorders with symptomatic and decreased daily life activities, especially Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The pulmonary rehabilitation team should consist of doctors, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, nurses, psychologists, behavioral specialists, exercise physiologists, nutritionists, occupational therapists, and social workers.

Patients who apply to the rehabilitation center should be evaluated by taking their detailed medical history, detailed examinations should be performed, and the exercise capacities of the patients should be determined. In order to determine the exercise capacity, it can be evaluated with simple tests such as the 6-minute walking test and the shuttle walking test at increased speed, or cardiopulmonary exercise tests using treadmill and bicycle ergometry can be used in necessary patients.

In addition, tests showing the patient's health-related quality of life, psychological and nutritional status will contribute to the creation of the rehabilitation program.

Arthritis, severe neurological cognitive psychiatric disorder, severe presence of pulmonary hypertension, and comorbidities such as variable cardiovascular disease are the criteria that will prevent the correct and effective implementation of Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Since it has been shown that patients aged 70 and over with COPD benefit from Pulmonary Rehabilitation, as in younger patients, individuals should not be excluded from these programs, which are effective only because of their age, in the elderly patient group.

After selecting the appropriate patient for pulmonary rehabilitation, the appropriate exercise program is selected for the patient, exercise training, information and education about the current disease, regulation of the drugs used and their use training, nutritional evaluation and nutrition to the patients in general condition, aerobics, endurance, strengthening, joint range of motion, chest mobilization exercises, secretion mobilization, airway clearance, controlled breathing techniques, abdominal muscle exercise and abdominal support, body posture exercise, relaxation exercise, energy conservation methods are shown and applied.

In chronic respiratory patients, if the patient's exercise tolerance has decreased, daily living activities are disrupted due to shortness of breath, shortness of breath at rest begins to occur, frequent hospital admissions and even hospitalizations occur due to shortness of breath, these patients are suitable pulmonary rehabilitation patients.

Pulmonary rehabilitation can be sustained during hospitalizations, admission to outpatient rehabilitation clinics, home therapy, or some combination of these.

Individual programs are organized for the patients who are included in the program. Because the disease level of the patients, additional diseases, muscle strength will determine the individual exercise program. However, the programs created in general are organized in sessions of 30-35 minutes, 3-5 days a week, for a period of 1-3 months.

After pulmonary rehabilitation programs, it is aimed to maximize exercise performance, increase participation in daily activities, improve health-related quality of life, reduce the number of acute exacerbations associated with the disease, and increase survival time, by reducing the symptom burden of the patient.
