Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) is a deformity of more than 10 degrees in the plane of the spine seen on X-ray.
Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) is a deformity of more than 10 degrees in the plane of the spine seen on X-ray.
Early diagnosis in scoliosis is of great importance as it increases the chance of treatment success.
The incidence of scoliosis is around 2-4%. It is about 8-10 times more common in girls than boys.
SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
Symptoms of scoliosis; sideways curved spine, forward-to-side curved spine, left or right shoulder protrusion, hip and shoulder asymmetry, presence of a second curvature on the first side, pain in the waist and back (together or separately), fatigue feeling and shortness of breath.
Congenital scoliosis, tumor or infection origin, spastic child, unknown cause (idiopathic) etc. There are many different reasons.
TYPES OF SCOLIOSIS:
Idiopathic (Cause unknown) Scoliosis: It is the most common type of scoliosis.
Neuromuscular Scoliosis: It is the second most common type of scoliosis.
Congenital Scoliosis: It is the third most common type of scoliosis, it is congenital.
NATURAL COURSE OF IDIOPATIC SCOLIOSIS
In the follow-up of scoliosis, the patient should be called for control at regular intervals and the degree of curvature should be measured with x-rays. Surgical procedure should be planned in cases where the curvature increases regularly and other neurological problems occur.
CONGENITAL SCOLIOSIS AND CORSET TREATMENT
In the treatment of scoliosis, it should be kept in mind that although a very small number of patients need surgery, the majority of them can be improved with follow-up, physical therapy and brace treatment. Corsets should be used for an average of 18-23 hours a day. Patients with curvature of 35 degrees or more should use a full-time corset. The use of corsets in children should continue until growth is completed.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN THE TREATMENT
Only 10% of curvatures need treatment. Planning in the treatment of scoliosis is made specific to the patient according to factors such as age, degree and location of the curvature, and severity of pain in adults. In particular, the degree of curvature and how far it has progressed are taken into account.
If the curvatures are above 45 and 50 degrees, they should be treated surgically. If severe curvatures are to be treated surgically, action should be taken without waiting for the curvature to progress too much, as it will increase the negative effects and blood loss will be greater during the operation.
As a surgical method, the spine is corrected by attaching the spine and rods to each other with pedicle screws or hybrid systems with the help of developing technology.
In the follow-up and treatment process of scoliosis, regular exercises at every stage, keeping the back muscles strong, increasing physical resistance and being in shape are very important factors.
